What a week so far. Boston Marathon bombed. People killed and people injured. America under attack… again. So far, we don’t know who did it. There have been several reports today about how the Investigators are coming close to discovering who is responsible. The news reports are a roller coaster of information and misinformation. I have watched and read and listened to much info, I suppose just like everyone else. I feel sorry for those who suffered and continue to suffer. It should have been a day of celebration.
Many reports state that this should be a wake up call. A wake up call? Don’t we already know that there are evil people out there who do evil things? Do we never, ever watch the news? When I watch the news, it usually tells about some evil shit that happened somewhere or something that happened in Government that day. I don’t recall many stories about things like some baby’s first steps. That’s pretty huge. I don’t recall in-depth coverage about how I sat on the couch with my wife and enjoyed watching an episode of Game of Thrones. Perhaps it was not as thrilling as living through a tsunami but it was still pretty cool.
So… as we deal with this bombing, we are kind of detached from all of the other things that were supposed to happen or continue to happen. Margaret Thatcher was buried today. Not much about that in today’s news here in the USA. What is going on with North Korea? Last I heard, they were just about to fling a nuke at someone. How about that gun control thing? Certainly, we are going forward with this, no? Well, in fact… no.
Help me understand how this works, because I’m just fucking baffled: On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot his mother at home and then went to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he killed 26 people (20 children and 6 faculty and staff) before killing himself. It was the second-deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre. In 2012 there were a great number of situations like this. We finally needed to get around to doing something about the gun problem. Months later, we finally arrive at a watered down version of some kind of gun legislation and it FAILS to pass Senate vote. FAILS to pass because even though there was a 54 YES v. 46 NO, it fell short of the 60-vote threshold needed to break a filibuster. Why?
Because… we have elected a bunch of spineless pussies to run our fucking country. Spineless Pussies* who are afraid to do the RIGHT thing because it just might screw with how people are elected in the future. Spineless pussies who are afraid that the NRA will back someone else when they are up for re-election. Spineless pussies who constantly tell us that Washington is broken and that they are here for US every time they want to win another election. In the meantime, people die as a result of violent gun acts that may have been prevented if legislation like this had been in place.
Look, I’m not against guns at all. I believe there’s a place for them. Hunting, the military, law enforcement, even target shooting if that turns you on. Maybe even home protection if you live in a place where you are likely to be invaded. With all of that, I see no reason not to beef up the background check process. Your neighbor can give you a car. You can put that car in your garage and look at it or show it to your friends but if you want to take it out and use it – you have to register that car. You have to give someone ALL of your info. If you buy a house, someone has your info. If you rent a place, someone has your info. Shit, if you want to sign up for Facebook, someone has your info. Why not a gun?
Because… the people who you trust to do the right thing and represent you and protect you are not doing that at all. They are looking out for their own interests and NOT doing the right thing. These people… spineless pussies.
*(No offense to people without spines or cats or people with pussies, which could also mean people with cats.)
